Mentoring

Mentoring is an important aspect of the services provided by Dans la rue. The longer youths are exposed to the dangers of street life, the more vulnerable they become and the more difficult it is for them to get back on the right track. For some youths, it is much easier to tolerate the pain and hardship of street life than it is to face the fear of the unknown and the anxiety of starting over again. Reaching out for help is the biggest barrier between these kids and a healthy, happy, productive future. Our mentoring counsellor is there to ease the transition between Dans la rue and the outside world.

Our mentoring program was developed to:

  • Support youths as they transition away from the organization once they have reached the upper age limit for our services (21 for the Bunker, 25 for the Day Centre)
  • Assist students as they continue their studies at another school
  • Accompany youths as they look for an apartment, go to legal or healthcare appointments, participate in mediation, etc.
  • Liaise with other resources
  • Refer youths to their community and local services

We are committed to providing the kids who come to Dans la rue with as much support as they need, for as long as they need it. That means helping youths integrate into the community and ensuring continuity with resources outside of our own walls.

In the last twelve months, DLR has accompanied 235 kids to important meetings and appointments. We also carried out 696 interventions through individual counselling.
